The Meaning of Christmas

Posted on December 24, 2014

Oh, we need a little Christmas…

 Snoopy Christmas

In the animated television special, A Charlie Brown Christmas, based on the popular comic strip of Charles M. Shultz called, Peanuts, Charlie Brown in utter frustration inquires if anyone knows what Christmas is really all about. Chuck’s inquiry follows his latest ‘blockhead’ disaster of picking the worst Christmas tree on the lot. Linus, Lucy’s younger brother speaks up and says, “Sure Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about.”

“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy that will be for all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” – Luke 2:8-14

“That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

To simplify, the God of all creation, Jesus Christ left the grandeur of heaven, stepped into human history through a virgin birth, and became a man, the God-man ‘Immanuel’ to live among us. Christmas is not ribbons, tags boxes or bags. It didn’t and doesn’t come from a store. Christmas you see is a whole lot more. Christmas you see was a rescue mission for you and for me.

Here’s hoping that each of us truly finds the ‘Meaning of Christmas’ this year.
